Dr. McElgunn discussing Fraxel Laser Treatment

What is Fraxel Laser used for?

Fraxel Laser is used to reverse signs of photo-aging such as wrinkles, age spots and sun spots. Because Fraxel spares healthy tissue it may be used on the face, neck, chest and hands.  Fraxel causes tightening b ut not lifting of the skin.

Is the Fraxel laser painful?

There is moderate discomfort associated with the Fraxel laser treatment. A topical cream anesthetic is applied to your face and left on for one hour so that you will be comfortable during the procedure.  We may also prescribe an oral pain medication to take by mouth before the treatment.

Is Fraxel safe?

Fraxel is FDA-approved.  The risks of scarring, pigmentation and redness are significantly less than with ablative laser procedures.

Are there any pre-treatment procedures?

If you are prone to cold sores, an anti-viral medication will be prescribed for you to start the day before your procedure and for several days after your procedure.

How is the procedure performed?

The Fraxel laser treatment is an office procedure which takes about 30-45 minutes.  The skin is first cleansed and the topical cream anesthetic is applied and left on for one hour.  After it is wiped off, a water-soluble tinted blue cream is applied to the treatment area. This allows the Fraxel handpiece to recognize the skin and therefore work. This is washed off after the procedure. The laser handpiece is applied to the skin and a cooling device is used at the same time for your comfort.

What are the possible side effects?

Because this laser does not remove the outer layer of skin, patients experience minimal after effects. You will experience a mild sunburn sensation for 1-2 hours after your laser treatment.  Redness and swelling is minimal and usually lasts for 3 days.  The skin will then have a pinkish tone for 5-7 days. Then your skin will have a bronze apprearance for several days.

How many treatments will I need?

For optimal improvement you should have a series of  3-5 treatments spaced 2-4 weeks apart.

When will I see results?

Results are both immediate and progressive, with noticeable, beneficial effects occurring immediately and for 1-3 months after the last treatment.

How do I take care of my skin after Fraxel Laser treatment?

As the skin heals, micro-exfoliation occurs.  Use a gentle moisturizer during this period.  In addition, a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and careful sun protection is important.

You may apply make-up the day following treatment.  You should also be able to return to work and social activities the day following your treatment.
