What Causes Facial Scars?

No matter how you were scarred, when they appear on your face it is troubling, with a negative impact on your self-esteem. Facial scars are often the result of trauma. They can be caused by several types of injuries including:

  • Cuts
  • Burns
  • Injuries
  • Surgeries
  • Acne
  • Illnesses such as chicken pox

A scar forms as part of the natural healing process. As new skin begins to form over the injured area, a visible mark will be left where the trauma once occurred. Unfortunately, facial scars can be noticeable or unsightly. We offer various treatments to reduce the appearance of facial scars for a more positive life experience.

What is the Treatment for Facial Scars?

Over-the-counter creams, gels, or ointments may be helpful for some scars. If these treatments cannot smooth a visible facial scar, modern aesthetic treatments are available to smooth scars or reduce redness. Our board-certified plastic surgeon may be able to surgically remove or alter the scar, so it is far less visible.

Red, pitted, or uneven acne scars can be treated with a range of cosmetic dermatological procedures such as microdermabrasion and microneedling. Steroid injections may be helpful for some types of scars. Dermal fillers are an effective method for improving the appearance of pitted scars, filling uneven areas to create a smoother skin surface.
