What is Hair Loss?

When you begin to lose your hair, this is referred to as male- or female-pattern baldness. Since your hair is so closely tied to your personal identity and appearance, suffering from hair loss can be a harsh blow to your feelings of confidence in your appearance.

What Causes Hair Loss?

The most common cause of hair loss is genetics. While it isn’t entirely clear why some hair follicles have a longer lifecycle than others, hair loss can be caused by:

  • Hormones
  • Stress
  • Fungal skin infections like ringworm
  • Drugs including those used to treat cancer, depression, or high blood pressure
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Dietary issues including eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa

How is Hair Loss Treated?

There are several methods that can successfully treat male- and female-pattern baldness. In cases where hair loss is caused by medication, diet, or illness, the condition may resolve over time. Hair loss treatments include over-the-counter medications and treatments such as Rogaine, or prescription Propecia, approved for the treatment of hair loss in men (but must not be handled by women), and several other medications. Hair transplant surgery may be an excellent way to restore healthy hair growth in thinning areas. Laser therapy or PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections have also been found to be effective in restoring healthier hair growth in some patients.
